ポチ袋とは、小さな封筒の通称です。

ポチ袋は、お年玉や旅館などで心づけ（チップ）を渡すときに使います。
Pochi bukuro is used when people give New Year’s gifts or a tip.
ポチ袋の「ポチ」は、「点、小さいもの、少しだけ」という意味の関西地方の方言に由来します。
“Pochi” of Pochi bukuro comes from a Kansai dialect meaning “a dot, a small thing, a little bit”.
明治時代に男性が芸者にチップを渡すときに使われたのがはじまりで、少しばかりの心遣いを小袋に入れ、「これっぽち」という控えめな気持ちが「ぽち」になったといわれています。
It is said that the term “pochi” was first used in Meiji era(1868-1912) when men gave tip to Geisha(traditional female Japanese entertainers), putting a little bit of thoughtfulness into a small envelopes, and the modest feeling of “kore-pochi” became “pochi”.
ご祝儀袋との違い
「ご祝儀」は英語で、”money gift for wedding“や”wedding money“といいます。
「ご祝儀袋」は、”a special envelope for monetary gift“、”a wedding envelope“といいましょう。
ご祝儀袋に比べて、ポチ袋は小さいです。
Compared to a wedding envelope, Pochi bukuro is smaller.
