Setsubun is the event held on February 3rd to pray for our happy and healthy life.
節分は、
In Japan, the last day of winter is called Setsubun.
On that day, people have a tradition to throw soybeans,
Throwing soybeans represents warding off bad luck and welcoming good luck!
日本では、冬の最後の日を節分と呼びます。
この日、大豆を投げる伝統があります。
大豆を投げることは、悪い運を取り除き、
良い運を迎えることを意味しています！
鬼は外、福は内
When we throw soybeans, we say “ Oni wa soto, Fuku wa uchi.”
The word “oni” means demon and “fuku” means happiness in Japanese.
“Soto” means out, and “uchi” means in.
大豆を投げるとき、わたしたちは、
「鬼は外、福はうち」といいます。
「おに」とは「鬼」を意味し、「ふく」とは「幸せ」
「そと」は「外」、「うち」は「内」を意味します。
節分に食べる大豆について
We eat our age plus one more soybeans.
It’s said that to eat soybeans on Setsubun makes people heathy and happy.
わたしたちは、年齢にひとつ加えた数の豆を食べます。
節分に大豆を食べると、人は元気で幸せになるといわれています。
恵方巻き
We also eat Ehomaki which is a sushi roll on Setsubun.
When you eat it on Setsubun, it is believed to be good luck.
When people eat it quietly, they look in the year’s lucky direction while they make a wish.
恵方巻は、巻き寿司のことで、
節分に食べると幸運になると信じられています。
恵方巻を食べるときは、その年の恵方をむいて、
お願い事をしながら静かに食べます。
